THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government is digging deep into the traditional tribal knowledge to come with an Ayurvedic cure to male infertility. Ayurdhara Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of the Kerala State Federation for SC/ST Development Cooperative, has come up with a unique organic Ayurveda product, called X Power, which it claims is effective in treating male infertility, oligospermia (deficiency of sperm cells) apart from enhancing libido and vitality.  P Donbosko, managing director of the Federation, said the agency medicine has received patent from the drug controller as per the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.

He told Express that Ayurdhara developed the medicine after seven years of clinical trials. Dr Anjana C S, production manager cum medical officer of Ayurdhara, said what differentiates X Power from other medicines in the market is its uniqueness in procuring the ingredients. “We procure herbal medicines from the registered tribal societies who collect the same from the forest. We never procure herbal plants from commercial planters. Tribal people know the time to harvest the plant parts when they near maturity, she said.

“We have scientifically proven the sperm count increase in the hospital run by Ayurdhara after administering the medicine,” said Dr Shalini Pradep, who is associated with the Federation. At present, X Power is not widely available in the market due to production constraints at its plant at Ancheri in Thrissur. Currently, the medicine is mostly administered to patients at the Ayurveda Panchakarma Centres in Thrissur and Thiruvananathapuram. Some selected medical practitioners too refer it to their patients.

In an effort to make the product widely available in the market, the Federation has drawn up `5-crore plan to ramp up the production. More retail units of the Ayurdhara would be opened in the state in the coming years to market X Power and other medicines. A proposal for the same has been submitted with the state government, said Donbosko.

Ayurdhara manufactures various ayurvedic medicines including five other patented Ayurvedic medicines worth Rs 75 lakh per month. Once the plant switches to automated mode, it expects to manufacture medicines worth Rs 3 crores per month. Once the automation is completed, the Ayurdhara expects the annual turnover to form Rs 10 crore to Rs 25 crore, said Donbosko.
