THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The UDF attacked the government over its silence on the landslide near MLA P V Anwar’s water theme park. Speaking in the Assembly, Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala alleged the Revenue Minister was feigning ignorance about the disaster near an MLA’s water theme park.

He said the Revenue Minister has become a total failure. A check dam with about 4 lakh litres of water storage capacity atop the hill is one of the reasons for the landslide, he said. Later,  Chennithala told reporters the government has been maintaining silence over the issue. “The landslide was near P V Anwar MLA’s water theme park,” he said.

However, neither the Chief Minister nor the Revenue Minister made any mention about P V Anwar MLA’s water theme park. Responding to the notice for adjournment motion, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said a five-member panel will look into the check dam at Kattippara.

“A panel of officers, including the Deputy Collector, soil conservation district officer, two experts from the disaster management authority, CWRDM and the panchayat secretary, has been entrusted to probe into the check dam at Kattippara,” he said.

‘No ecological sensitive areas in Koodaranji’

Kozhikode: Koodaranji panchayat president Soly Joseph said the local body has already issued notice to the park directing it to stop all operation until further order in the backdrop of landslides. “The panchayat wouldn’t resist the park’s operation if it’s ready to comply with norms,” said Joseph. She countered the charge that the park is situated at ecologically-sensitive area. “Now, the district administration is probing the issue and further steps will be taken based on the report,” she said. Meanwhile, Mohanan, who is preparing a report, said the place where the park is situated was not ecologically-sensitive. “Some minor landslides were detected on the park premises. But, we couldn’t reach a conclusion whether the park is posing any ecological threat. A detailed study is required to assert such a detail,” said the officer.
