THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday informed the Assembly the government will not allow human rights violations in the name of discipline in the police force.
The CM was responding to the Opposition’s demand for an investigation by a special team into the alleged assault of police driver Gavaskar by ADGP Sudesh Kumar’s daughter.

Calling the use of junior officers/camp followers for personal use as a “cultural rot’’ descended from the British era police system, he said such tendencies will be brought to an end.  The government has issued instructions to ascertain whether senior police officers were using subordinates, who should be deployed on official duties, for household duties and their personal needs, he said.

Such tendencies have reared their heads in the force in the past also, he said. The government will ensure respect and protection of human rights to all employees, including police constables. Human rights violation by any officer will not be tolerated, he said. “In this matter, any officer who goes against the instructions of the government and the police chief will attract stern action,’’ he said.

The Opposition, meanwhile, demanded the constitution of a special team to probe this case saying the CB probe is liable to lag indefinitely. To this, the CM said the ADGP Crime Branch is leading the probe and it was equal to probe by a special team.

‘Action will be taken if complaint is fake’

T’Puram: State police chief Loknath Behera said a criminal case will be initiated against the daughter of ADGP Sudesh Kumar if her complaint against the police driver turns out to be fake. Snigdha, daughter of the senior officer, was booked under non-bailable offences on the basis of a complaint filed by police driver Gavaskar. Gavaskar had complained the woman attacked him after he had taken her to Kanakakunnu Palace ground for a morning walk in the official car. To this, the woman filed a counter-case against the police driver alleging he had tried to outrage her modesty.
