LDF, Opposition spar over Ganesh Kumar issue in House

The Anchal CI has been transferred and a new investigation officer - T Sathikumar - was posted to probe into the alleged assault of a woman and her son by Pathanapuram MLA KB Ganesh Kumar.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The Anchal CI has been transferred and a new investigation officer - T Sathikumar - was posted to probe into the alleged assault of a woman and her son by Pathanapuram MLA KB Ganesh Kumar and his driver, the government informed the Assembly on Tuesday.

Responding to a submission from Anil Akkara, tourism minister Kadakampally Surendran who responded on behalf of the Chief Minister, said two cases have been registered - one case against each parties - and investigation is on. The district police chief has been told to carry out proper investigation into the incident.

Anil Akkara demanded that the Anchal CI should be suspended for delay in investigation. The House also witnessed verbal duel between LDF and UDF legislators over the issue. A section of Left MLAs questioned why Anil Akkara should come up with a submission on an issue in Kollam. This led to an uproar in the House for sometime. Intervening in the issue, Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala registered his protest over senior Left leader E P Jayarajan allegedly trying to intimidate Anil Akkara.
Innocence will be proven: Ganesh

Later in his personal explanation before the House, K B Ganesh Kumar hoped that his innocence would be proven. The Pathanapuram MLA alleged an attempt to malign the Left government in the state through such campaigns.

“Right from the time the Left government came to power, attempts have been made from certain section of media to attack the government and portray it in bad light,” he said and hoped that when his innocence is proven his colleagues in the Assembly would change their statements.

Ganesh Kumar’s remarks on Chengannur bypoll referring to an election announcement - terming BJP leader P S Sreedharan Pillai as UDF candidate - invited protests from the opposition legislators.

Transfer  not connected with assault case
Even as the government told the Assembly that the Anchal CI was transferred in the incident, it has come out that the transfer has no connection with the incident. The incident occurred on June 13 while the transfer order was issued on May 30 itself. On Tuesday the minister told the House that the CI was transferred and a new investigation officer was appointed hence giving the impression that the transfer was part of disciplinary action against the police officer for delay in investigation.
