THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:Alleging that the LDF Government is trying to protect top CPM leaders in the Varapuzha custodial death case by giving a clean chit to former SP A V George, UDF MLAs staged a walkout from the Assembly on Wednesday. Raising the issue, Congress MLA V D Satheesan demanded that George’s phone records should be verified.

“There are allegations that Sreejith was taken into custody based on the directives of CPM leaders. It’s evident that top CPM leaders are involved,” he said. “If the former SP is arrested, the names of others involved in the crime will also come out. Such incidents are recurring in the state. The Chief Minister should directly review the probe.”

Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala alleged that the CM was trying to mislead the House with his statement that Sreejith’s family is happy with the investigation. “Kerala has come to a state where anybody can be killed with `10 lakh and a government job,” he said at a press meet, referring to the compensation given to Sreejith’s family.

However, CM Pinarayi Viajyan said the government will not intervene in the investigation or legal advice. There’s nothing unnatural in the probe team seeking legal advice, he said. “If there’s any evidence, the investigation team can take action. Also, if there are lapses in the investigation, let the court find out,” said Pinarayi. The LDF Government does not take custodial death or torture casually. But it’s not the first custodial death in the state, he added.

Adjournment motion

Earlier, Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan denied permission for the Opposition to move notice for an adjournment motion, stating that the Varapuzha case is pending before court. This led to a tussle between the Speaker and the Opposition leader, who questioned the decision. Later, the Speaker agreed to the issue being raised as a submission.
