KOCHI: “How was it possible for the Rural Tiger Force (RTF) personnel, the accused in the Sreejith custodial murder case, to arrest Sreejith without the knowledge of the district police chief. Is this a banana republic?,” the Kerala High Court asked on Thursday while criticising the action of the police in the case.
The court made the oral observation while considering a petition filed by Sreejith’s wife Akhila seeking a CBI probe into the case.

The petitioner said at the time of taking into custody and throughout in police custody Sreejith was brutally assaulted and he was severely injured which resulted in his death on April 9. The police took away Sreejith and his brother Sajith on April 6 from their house. Sreejith was brutally murdered by the police following a conspiracy hatched under the leadership of the then district police chief (Rural) A V George.

The Director-General of Prosecution submitted there was no iota of evidence to connect A V George with the crime. However, the formation of RTF by him was illegal. The court asked how the police personnel could act without the knowledge of the district police chief. “What are the materials with the RTF team to identify the accused?” the court asked.

According to the prosecution, as many as 11 police officers, including the former Ernakulam rural police chief, were suspended and proceeded against departmentally in connection with the custodial death.
