Malayalam writer Sujatha Devi, sister of Sugatha Kumari passes away

Sujatha Devi, also a well known travel writer, had served as English professor in various government colleges in the state, including the Maharaja's college in Kochi.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: B Sujatha Devi, poetess and winner of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award, passed away at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday following brief illness. She was 72 and leaves behind two sons. Sujatha Devi, the younger sister of poetess Sugatha Kumari and late professor Hridya Kumari, had been undergoing treatment at SUT Royal hospital here.

Sujatha Devi, also a well-known travel writer, had worked as an English professor in various government colleges in the state, including the Maharaja's college in Kochi. A recipient of Kerala Sahitya Akademi’s award for travel writing, Sujatha Devi published several books including poetry collections.

Her husband P Gopalakrishnan had predeceased her. Parameswaran, Govindan(late) and Padmanabhan are her children. Her body will be kept at the residence of Sugathakumari for the public to pay homage and the cremation will be held at Santhi Kavadam in Thycaud by afternoon. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who expressed his condolence in her death said she was noted for her poetry collections and travel writings.
