Sceptical about official list, Police Association conducts own survey

Casting doubts about the accuracy of the official list prepared by the Police Department on the orderlies and camp followers deployed with senior police officers

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Casting doubts about the accuracy of the official list prepared by the Police Department on the orderlies and camp followers deployed with senior police officers, the wwolice Association has started a parallel move to collect details of the orderlies and camp followers including their head count. The association has already completed collecting details in Thiruvananthapuram and Wayanad. The rest are expected to be completed by this week.

As per the list prepared by ADGP Ananthakrishnan, 1,239 camp followers are there to serve the force, while around 1,000 policemen are working as orderlies and private security officers. Of this only one third is serving police officers. However, the association office bearers suspect this to be a diluted figure. “We have a feeling this list is incomplete,” said one of the association office-bearers. “When the controversy erupted, at that time itself some of the policemen were sent back to their units. So the official head count — the list that was compiled from various units and counter signed by the ADGP —  gives a skewed picture,” the office-bearer said.

As per the official list, 66 policemen were deployed with senior police officers, while 81 were with politicians, bureaucrats and judges. The association officials refused to reveal their stats, but said their count for the capital city and Wayanad were very much different from the official one.

“The accuracy of our list will be more because we collected the information from each of the police stations in the state,” sources said. The names and numbers of the policemen from a district who are serving as followers and orderlies were collected. So when the count from the whole state comes, it will give a better picture than the official list,” sources said.It has been learnt once the final list is completed, the same will be forwarded to the Chief Minister. “It will happen by next week,” sources said.
