Nipah outbreak: Kerala government announces gold medal for health workers

The state government has also decided to institute an award for the best nurse in government service in the name of Lini Puthussery.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has announced gold medals and advance increments to government employees for their commendable service during the Nipah outbreak in Kozhikode.

The state cabinet meet has decided to give an advance increment to the employees including doctors. A total of 61 staff including 4 Assistant Professors, 19 staff nurse, 7 nursing assistants, 17 cleaning staff, 4 hospital attenders, 2 Health Inspectors, 5 security personnel, 3 laboratory technicians and one plumber will be given advance increment to recognise their selfless service during the virus outbreak.

In addition to this three Senior Resident Doctors and 12 Junior Resident Doctors would be awarded gold medals of one sovereign, said an official communique.

The state government has also decided to institute an award for the best nurse in government service in the name of Lini Puthussery, the nurse who died due to Nipah infection while treating a Nipah-affected patient. The World Health Organisation (WHO) had paid tributes to the nurse for her selfless service.
