Pinarayi Vijayan government hikes housing compensation for the flood-affected families

The state government has decided to give a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to those whose houses were completely  damaged irrespective of the region.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state Cabinet has decided to hike the compensation amount given to those who lost their houses in the recent deluge. People whose houses were completely destroyed will get Rs 4 lakh. The Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF) will be tapped to disburse Rs 1,000 crore. 

As per decisions taken on Wednesday, around 75 per cent or more damaged houses will be termed as fully damaged. As per Central norms, fully damaged houses in high ranges will get Rs 1,01,900, while those in the plains will get Rs 95,100 from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).

The state government has decided to give a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to those whose houses were completely  damaged irrespective of the region. 

In addition to funds from the NDRF, the CMDRF will be tapped to provide Rs 2,98,100 in hilly regions and Rs 3,04,900 in plains. Those whose houses were partially damaged will be given compensation based on four categories. People whose houses suffered at least 15 per cent damage will get Rs 10,000, including Rs 4,800 from the CMDRF.

With the compensation revised as per the new norms, more than Rs 1,000 crore will be given from the CMDRF, while around Rs 450 crore will come from the NDRF.

A decision was taken to provide more funds from the CMDRF taking into consideration the gravity of the loss. A total of 2.43 lakh families will benefit from the decision.
