THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  THE victory of Ancy Sojan of Government Fisheries Higher Secondary School, Nattika, who registered a facile win in the girls’ 100 m race, is all the more creditable since she braved a niggling injury to come up trumps.

The Class XI student’s 100 m gold is her second medal at the State Schools’ Championship. She had leapt to third place in the girls’ triple jump. Hailing from Natikka in Thrissur, she is the daughter of Sojan E T, an auto driver, and Jancy employed at the Triveni supermarket. “ Ancy had injured her ankle while taking part in the 100 m race at the district meet held the other day.

Though we were unwilling to let her take the field on Saturday, Ancy was firm she wanted to compete since she was unwilling to give up,” said Sanuj V, Ancy’s coach. The bidding champion breasted the tape in 12.26 seconds to run away with the sprint queen’s title. Ancy had won four gold at the School Games Federation Of India (SGFI) National Championships in Bhopal. She will also be in the fray in the girls’ 200 m which will be held on Sunday.

“ Aparna Roy was the only one who provided some competition to me in the 100 m and I was able to outrun her. I am grateful to my parents that they encouraged me to pursue my interest in sport. I am blessed they were both athletes during their time. I hope to win the 200 m race as well,” said Ancy.
