Around 50 endosulfan victims from Kasargod, who were on a sit-in protest outside the Chief Minister’s residence here since Republic Day, called off their agitation on Tuesday after the government agreed to most of their demands.

The government, represented by Ministers V S Sivakumar, M K Muneer and K P Mohanan, held a meeting with the agitators in the presence of Leader of Opposition V S Achuthanandan and CPI leader Benoy Viswam on Tuesday afternoon. As per the agreement reached with the protesters, the government announced that the pending first instalment of compensation for endosulfan victims would be disbursed before March 31.

According to the protesters, around 3,115 out of the 5,000-plus endosulfan victims had not even received the first instalment of compensation from the government.

The government also agreed to another key demand of the protesters that the scope of endosulfan package should not be limited to only 11 panchayats.

“The government has agreed that all victims of endosulfan poisoning in Kasargod and also those who have moved out of the district will be entitled to compensation,” Ambalathara Kunjikrishnan, convener of the Endosulfan Peeditha Janakeeya Munnani said.

The victims had also asked the government to reject Justice C N Ramachandran Nair Committee report which further limited the scope of endosulfan victims.
