There was a heavy rush of pilgrims to the Lord Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala on Friday even as security was intensified in view of the anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya.

The fly-over at Sopanam was jampacked when  the hill shrine was opened at 4 am and the queue extended beyond the Valiya Nadapandal.

Pilgrims were having a harrowing experience from the security personnel at the metal detectors, X-ray machines and bomb squad points at key positions at the Marakottam, Valiya Nadapandal, Staff Gate and North Gate.

The VIP enclosure in front of the Sreekovil and VIP queue on the north side of the Sreekovil were closed for darsan as part of the precautionary measure.

At Pampa, security personnel, with the help of the Central para-military personnel, clamped tight security measures to prevent any untoward incident.

Three door-frame metal detectors were erected near the entrance of the Lord Ganapathi temple, Anjaneya Auditorium and near Pandalam Raja as part of the security measure.

Also tractor traffic was restricted between Pampa and Sannidhanam, excluding essential items for the Aravana prasadam.
