The Additional Sessions Court here on Monday sentenced the first accused in CPM leader M A Ashraf’s murder case Abdul Khader, 47, to life imprisonment. The murder took place in July, 2002. The verdict was pronounced by Judge M Nanda Kumar.

16 people were arrested by the police in connection with the case and five were sentenced to life term earlier in 2009 and seven were acquitted by the court.  Of the 16, the one who threw bomb at Ashraf’s house and three involved in the conspiracy were acquitted by the court citing lack of evidence.

Those sentenced to life term earlier were second accused Sabu Khan, fourth accused Junail, fifth accused Mohammed Kunju, eighth accused Anzar and ninth accused Sherif.  Ashraff’s family approached the High Court against this verdict and pleaded to bring to justice the acquitted in the case. The HC gave one-year time for the disposal of the case and the hearing at the Additional Sessions Court here restarted on September 3, 2013. The four months of hearing ended up by awarding life term to Abdul Khader. Abdul Khader was absconding and the Emigration authorities took him into custody from the Mumbai International Airport and handed over to Kerala police. The others accused in this case are  absconding.
