Some incidents of voting machine malfunction and confusion over identity cards caused delays in polling at certain places in Ernakulam and Chalakkudy constituency on Thursday.

Voting machine malfunctioning disrupted polling for a short period at Vypeen and Njarakkal while confusion over identity card to be produced was a matter of concern for officials deployed at St Joseph’s High School, at Kidangoor near Perumbavoor, under the Chalakkudy constituency.

Since it was only a minor error, it was rectified immediately and polling resumed. Manjummel, Kalamassery,  Edappally and Thrikakkara also witnessed minor troubles which were resolved.

At a booth in Kalamassery, the button for the AAP candidate was not working properly on the EVM. This disrupted polling for two hours at the booth. Later, the machine was replaced and voting resumed. Meanwhile, AAP candidate Anitha Prathap reached the booth and lodged a complaint with the District Collector in this regard. The AAP has demanded re-polling at this booth. There were heated arguments between voters and officials at St Joseph’s School, Kidangoor, when the officials insisted that voters produce the Voter Identity Card, even though they carried voters’ slips issued by the Election Commission. The voters pointed out that it was clearly stated on the slip that the slip could be used to identify the person. However, with the officials adamant on their stand, many voters had to return home and come back with the identity card.
