When it comes to electricity, get ready for some belt-tightening. Energy forecasts for the approaching summer months are not exactly encouraging for either the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) or its 1.1 crore consumers.

Daily consumption in March is expected to average a never-before 67.65 million units (MU). In April, it will slip to 66.37 MU and in May, to 64.45 MU, according to Power Department forecasts. During the same period last year, it had hovered around 63-64 MU.

On the one hand, to meet this demand, KSEBĀ  plans to up hydro-electricity generation to 20-22 MU per day. On the other, it hopes to get a daily quota of 26-27 MU from the central generating stations (central share). This is in addition to purchases of 10-12 MW from traders. The state-run power utility has also inked agreements with various traders for supply of electricity for upto May and October, covering the summer months, according to data presented by the Electricity Minister in the Assembly on Thursday.

These summer projections, however, indicate only a small part of what is in store for the entire 2014-15 financial year. According to the 18th Electric Power Survey of India, the peak load - the peak usage of electricity at a given point of time - is expected to shoot up to a whopping 4137 megawatts (MW). And based on 2013-14 standards, the state will require 22700 million units (MU) in 2014-15.

As it has been for some years now, the state will continue to be highly dependent on the central quota to meet the demand.
