Programmes galore for Gandhi Jayanti

The district administration, several government departments and civil society organisations will join together to celebrate Gandhi Sevana Varam from Wednesday onwards, said district collector P I Sheik Pareeth. “Gandhijayanti Sevana Vaaram” is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of the father of the nation. Apart from district administration, several departments and institutions like   Information Office, Police, Excise, Health, Local Bodies, Kudumbasree, State Youth Welfare board, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Cycle Polo Association, Khadi Board, Gandhi Bhavan, several residents associations and other civil society organisations are taking part in the celebration.

Excise minister K Babu will inaugurate the Sevana Vaaram at Durbar Hall ground on Wednesday at 8.30 am. The collector said that a cycle rally and a mass run would be organised to create awareness about lifestyle diseases and increasing drug/alcohol consumption as part of the Sevana Varam. The cycle rally will start from Chathyath Gosree road and will finish at Durbar Hall ground. The marathon team will join the cycle rally from the premises of Ernakulam Guest House. Elected representatives and senior officials will attend the inaugural function.

Screening of the films on Gandhi’s life has also been organised. Richard Attenborough’s classic film “Gandhi” will be screened at Durbar Hall ground on Wednesday. Sabarmathi Cultural forum and Distrcit information office will organise Gandhi film festival. The theater at the Childrens Park will be the venue for the film festival. Four films will be screened at the festival.  The district collector will inaugurate the festival at 10 am. “Gandhi my father” will be the inaugural film.

Deputy Director of Education P T George said that all schools in the district would observe Sevana Vaaram. Students Police Cadet Govt Girls HS Unit and YMCA South Branch will observe Gandhi jayanthi by cleaning the Vytila mobility hub and premises. The organisers said that they will also distribute pamphlets that contain messages of Gandhi. Planting of trees will also take place.

Gandhi Peace Foundation will distribute the awards to the students who secured ranks in the Gandhi Darshan Curriculum. The venue will be the residence of Justice V R Krishna Iyer. Save Kerala Movement and Gandhi Bhavan Committee will organise mass prayer and a meeting of social and cultural workers at Gandhi Bahavan, kacheripady at 9.30 am.“Pakalveedu”, a forum of senior citizens, will also join the celebrations at Gandhi Bhavan. Rotary Club of Fort Kochi and Myhtri group will join together to organise a ‘sramadhan’ at Karuvelipadi Government Hospital.
