The government will work for achieving its goal of providing “social security to all’’ and if needed, existing laws will be amended and new ones enacted to realise the objective, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Friday.

Chandy was speaking during the launch of ‘We Care’ project of the Kerala Social Security Mission (KSSM) which provides a platform for the public as well as institutions to make financial contributions towards various social welfare programmes of the government.

“The slogan of the government is development with care. While we strive to achieve economic growth and prosperity, providing care to the needy is equally important,’’ Chandy said underlining the importance his government gives to social welfare.

“Along with the government, it is the responsibility of every citizen to provide help to the needy. A society which helps those in need will instill confidence and satisfaction among its members,’’ the Chief Minister said.

Social Justice Minister M K Muneer, Additional Chief Secretary (Social Justice) K M Abraham, Planning Board member G Vijyaraghavan, Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) V Somasundaran and top officials of the Social Justice Directorate and KSSM were present on the occasion.  ‘We Care’ is an ambitious project of the Kerala Social Security Mission that aims mainly at seeking voluntary donations from companies both in the public and private sector along with individuals. It was launched after the government realised that budgetary allocation alone would not be sufficient for implementing large-scale social welfare projects.  An e-payment gateway has been launched in the KSSM website to enable contributions from around the world. Donors will be given tax exemption of up to 50 per cent and the government plans to raise it to 100 per cent.

The money collected will also be subjected to a social audit and will be utilised for various programmes of the Social Justice Department.
