Even as some of the country’s best sportspersons received coveted awards from President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday, the Arjuna Award announced for triple jumper Renjith Maheshwary has been withheld to cross-check on an alleged dope violation that happened five years ago.

The Sports Ministry took the decision to verify the facts that led to the Kerala athlete’s suspension for three months after the 48th Open National Athletics Championship held at the Maharaja’s College Stadium in Kochi in 2008. The triple jumper’s urine sample had tested positive for Ephedrine and he was suspended by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) after a hearing, accepting the athlete’s version that the substance may have crept into his system through the medicines he had taken for fever and cold.

While the Sports Ministry has not removed Renjith from the list of Arjuna awardees for the year, the athlete has been asked to stay in Delhi till Monday when a final decision is expected to be made.

Though dejected by the turn of events, Renjith said that he deserved the award as he had never been caught for doping.

“I met the Sports Minister today and told him what had happened in 2008,” Renjith told Express from Delhi.
