The State Government has declared all roads to Sabarimala hillshrine and adjoining areas as Special Security Zone till January 19, 2014, the culmination day of Makaravilakku festival. The government, in its notification dated November 22, declared the routes to Sabarimala from and through Elavunkal, Chalakayam, Pampa, Neelimala, Sannidhanam, Swami Ayyappan Road, Pandithavalam, Uppupara, Pulmedu, Kozhikkanam and Sathram and the adjoining areas extending one kilometre on both sides of the route as Special Security Zone. The routes have been declared as high security zone in view of the prevailing security threats from fundamentalist elements, terrorists and other anti-social elements as well as considering the safety of pilgrims, the government notification said. The police will also patrol various forest paths that lead to the shrine. The government has issued such an order based on the recommendation of the State Police Chief. With the mandala- makaravilakku season starting from November 14, the Police Department has already made elaborate security arrangements for the smooth conduct of the festival and for the safety of the pilgrims and worship centres at Sabarimala, Pampa, Erumeli and other important places. During the last season also, the government had issued a similar notification. As part of the security arrangements, the police have already installed doorframefitted metal detectors and baggage scanners at the entrance to the temple. Security cameras and watch towers have been set up at Sabarimala and surrounding areas to cover the entire pilgrimage area. Thunderbolts, the commando wing of the Kerala state police, have been stationed at Sannidhanam and Pampa. Moreover, the teams of Rapid Action Force of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) will also be stationed at Sabarimala.
