Seeking to clear the air over the anaesthesia administered to Sunanda Pushkar on Tuesday, which gave rise to doubts that she might have undergone surgery days before her death, the hospital authorities said it was done as part of a “routine medical examination” and that Union minister Shashi Tharoor’s wife wasn’t suffering from any “life-threatening” disease.

“Yes. She was given anaesthesia. But that was for conducting endoscopy,” vice-chairman and director of Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) G Vijayaraghavan told Express here.

Vijayaraghavan was reacting to an Express report which quoted Tharoor as saying that Sunanda had recovered from anaesthesia. “The endoscopy was part of our investigation process. Since it is painful, mild anaesthesia is administered,” he said.

Earlier, addressing a press conference, Vijayaraghavan repeatedly said that Sunanda was not suffering from any “life-threatening disease”.

“She walked out of the hospital and even watched the Lakshadeepam ceremony at Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple, where she sat on the floor, on Tuesday evening” he said.

However, the hospital authorities expressed surprise when told that Sunanda had to be wheeled in to a New Delhi flight on Wednesday morning.

A terse medical summary issued by the hospital read: “In view of respecting the patient’s confidentiality, we cannot divulge the medical details of the patient. They (Tharoor and Sunanda) were supposed to come back for a review after one week with the pending investigation results”. Express spoke to doctors on the medical board who, on condition of anonymity, said Sunanda was suffering from abdominal tuberculosis.
