A day before the pronouncement of the final judgment in the T P Chandrasekharan murder case, CPM veteran and Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan reiterated his stand that the Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader was a “brave communist, who stood against right-wing opportunism and fought for upholding communist virtues”.

Putting the CPM state leadership in the dock on the eve of the party politburo meeting, the veteran leader went on to say that T P Chandrasekharan was butchered while he was considering VS’ request to return to the CPM. He also hailed Chandrasekharan as a “model for the youth and communists alike”.

VS’ extolment for Chandrasekharan while giving an interview to Malayalam Kala Kayika Vedi -- the cultural arm of the RMP at Orkkateri which is producing a documentary on the slain party leader -- on Friday was leaked to the media by Monday afternoon.

He demanded a comprehensive probe into the controversial visit of Nedumbasseri gold smuggling case accused Fayaz to the Kozhikode District Jail to meet the accused in TP murder case.

“It was very surprising that an international smuggler visited the murder case accused in the jail. The meeting could not have been possible without the help of the police. Hence, the relation of the accused with smugglers and anti-national activists should be brought to light through a thorough inquiry,” VS said during the interview.

Sources close to the cultural outfit said the documentary would be a portrayal of Chandrasekharan’s life through the words of early communist leaders as well as the people in and around Orkkatteri, with whom the RMP leader had close relations.

Disown CPM: Rema to VS

Terming VS’ statements on her husband as “noteworthy”, Chandrasekharan’s widow K K Rema said the CPM leader’s comment appeared to be an indication of something which would happen in the near future. “Chandrasekharan had always upheld the stance of V S Achuthanandan. For taking such a stand, he had to quit the CPM and had to sacrifice his life for that. V S Achuthanandan should take a bold stand. There is no point in him continuing in the CPM,” Rema said.
