BHUBANESWAR: Minister for Cooperation Prafulla Samal has said 507 cooperative institutions are lying defunct.

Replying to a question from Ramesh Chandra Chau Patnaik (BJD) in the Assembly, the Minister said tripartite agreements have been signed to revive five defunct cold storages through joint ventures. Similarly, steps are being taken to revive seven other cold storages through joint ventures, he said.

The Minister said steps are also being taken for revival of defunct rice mills under the regional marketing cooperative societies (RMCSs). He said 24 out of the 46 loss-making CARD banks will be revived.

Besides, the viability of merging loss- making cooperative societies with the nearby profit-making societies is being examined.
