CUTTACK: In a tragic incident, two persons died and two were critically injured when a wall in an under construction building caved in at Sector 9, CDA, within Markat Nagar police limits on Thursday evening.

The deceased and the injured were labourers engaged in the construction work at Plot No. 1156. The dead have been identified as Madhusudan Munda (22) and Santosh Munda (30) of Mayuranachuni village of Keonjhar district. The two critically injured Parameshwar Mohanta and Pitambar Munda, both of the same village, have been rushed to the SCB Medical College and Hospital.

According to reports, about seven persons from the Mayurnachuni village had been brought in by the contractor to work at the plot, the owner of which is yet to be identified. They had come to Cuttack on March 19 and had been engaged in the construction of the building since then.

On Thursday evening, they were working on the basement construction when the mishap occurred. The wall on one side of the basement caved in and collapsed on the men working on the floor. The brick wall had been erected only around a week back.

Madhusudan and Santosh were directly under the structure when the wall came down and were immediately crushed by the weight. The other two were also trapped inside but could be rescued in time.

However, Madusudan and Santosh had died before they could be rescued. Three others escaped unhurt.

Recounting the incident, one of the lucky labourers Buddhadev said, “We were caught unawares as the wall came down suddenly. I was fortunate as I was away from the wall and nearer to the exit.”
