BALASORE: A fast track court here on Friday sentenced one Ranjan Singh (28) to death for killing four persons, including three women in 2007.

Ad hoc Additional Sessions Judge of Fast Track Court II, RK Sahu sentenced Singh to death on Friday.

Singh of Pratappur village under Nilgiri police limits had murdered Rabi Singh and his wife Budhini Singh (40) of Mayurbhanj and Somabari Singh (42) and Tia Singh (40) of Pratappur in August 2007, suspecting them of practicing sorcery. They were all hacked to death and their bodies, packed in gunny bags, thrown into a river.

Sources said one Raju Singh, son of Shiva Singh of the village, died of snake bite in August 2007.

The villagers held Rabi and Budhini, who had then come to their relative’s house in the village, responsible for his death.The court had acquitted 21 others due to lack of evidence.
