KORAPUT: The CPI (Maoist) Srikakulam Jhanjabati organising committee secretary, Sitru Kani Reddy alias V

Appana Naidu, was gunned down by security forces at Badmachul village under Bandhugaon police limits

on Thursday. A woman cadre was also killed in the

encounter.

The duo was killed during a combing operation in the forest following an intelligence report, DIG, South Western Range, S K Priyadarshi told mediapersons on Friday.  The exchange of fire between police and Maoists, that went on for more than an hour, saw the two dead while many cadres were reportedly injured. Two rifles, eight live cartridges, two kit bags and Maoist literature were seized from the spot.

Sitru was involved in several cases, including the killing of a tribal Ankuda Kendrukaa of Alengwalsa village on January 6, 2012 and Ganesh Khosla of Mahuguda village on May 1, 2011.

A native of Kusumur village of Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh, Sitru had joined the outfit in 1993.

He was operating in some areas bordering Vizianagaram and Rayagada districts under Jhanjabati area committee.

The operation was led by Koraput SP Anup Sahoo, Additional SP Santosh Mal Laxmipur, SDPO Y Jagannath Rao and Semliguda IIC Sarat Kumar Sahu.
