BHUBANESWAR: Burglars on Wednesday night broke into Lalchand Jewellers in the heart of the city and decamped with silver ware worth several lakhs. They cut open the shutters and broke the locks of the store located on the ground floor.

The incident is reported to have occurred after 2.30 am.

Police began investigation in the morning. A  complaint in this regard was lodged by Nirmal Hans with Kharavel Nagar police station.

According to police, four security guards were on job but on Wednesday, one of them had a day off. The rest three had apparently left by the time the burglary took place.

The CCTV which was placed outside the building captured two persons carrying the loot in a sack. The picture quality, however, is hazy. The camera placed inside the store was switched off.

The gold and diamond articles were kept in the strong room and remained untouched, while the silver ware was out on the shelves which made the burglary easy. The thieves broke at least eight locks to gain entry.

Interestingly, there is a police assistance booth just outside the building where the jewellery store is located but the theft went unnoticed. Police detained the security guards and are quizzing them.
