Tension prevailed at Mahidas Bazaar area after residents of two localities engaged in brick-batting here on Saturday. The incident left several persons injured. The area wore a deserted look as police swung into action and locals fled their homes. The locality was found littered with bricks and stones which both sides hurled at each other. Mahidas Bazar comes under Lalbag Police limits.
Police said, tension was simmering between Dhoba Sahi and Bhoi Sahi since the Durga Puja as both localities were at loggerheads over a trivial issue. It spilled on to the streets on Saturday and locals used bricks, stones and bottles as missiles and targeted the rival groups.
While several persons from both the localities were injured, three platoons of police were mobilised to the affected area. While situation has improved, police are keeping a close watch.
