Youth Nabbed for Rape of Minor

A 28-year-old youth was arrested by Jajpur Road police on Saturday night on charge of raping a 10-year-old girl at Managobindapur village in the district on Friday.

A 28-year-old youth was arrested by Jajpur Road police on Saturday night on charge of raping a 10-year-old girl at Managobindapur village in the district on Friday.

The accused, Tapan Kumar Mirdha (28), a native of Sadar police area of Balasore district, was residing in a rented house at Managobindapur village. According to the FIR filed by the victim’s father on Saturday, his daughter, a Class V student of Managobindapur Nodal Upper Primary School, had gone to the school with some of her classmates on Friday. While she was returning alone in the afternoon, the accused lured her by giving chocolates. He then took her to his rented house and raped her.

IIC of Jajpur Road police Aswini Kumar Sahu said the victim informed her parents about the sexual assault after reaching home. The accused fled after the matter was reported to the village committee by the victim’s father on the same night.

After an FIR was filed at the police station on Saturday, the police sent the victim for medical examination to a hospital at Jajpur Road. The medical examination confirmed rape, police said.

On the basis of the medical report, the police registered a case against Mirdha under Section 376 of the IPC and Section 4 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

After conducting raids at various places, the accused was finally arrested while he was trying to board a Howrah-bound train at Jajpur-Keonjhar Road railway station late Saturday night, the IIC said.

After medical examination, the accused was forwarded to court on Sunday. Later, he was remanded to judicial custody after his bail plea was rejected, police said.
