Odisha: BJD leaders review functioning of hospital

Worried over the death of nine newborns at VSS Medical College and Medical College and Hospital at Burla, ruling BJD leaders Sunday visited the special newborn care unit (SNCU) at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here and reviewed its functioning.

Rajya Sabha MP Renubala Pradhan, Berhampur MLA Ramesh Chandra Chyaupatnaik and Ganjam district BJD president Subash Moharana advised the hospital authorities to take utmost care on the newborns to prevent Burla like incidents here.

BJD lawmakers also discussed this with mothers and their relatives.

"We can't say immediately on the reason behind the death of nine newborn babies within a span of 24 hours at Burla yesterday. It will be known after the inquiry by the expert team, constituted by the government. But we can say the incident as an unfortunate," they said.

"We have visited MKCG medical college and hospital to review the functioning of the unit. We asked them to take utmost care of the newborns to reduce the infants mortality rate (IMR)," the MP said.

She also emphasised on maintaining of cleanness in the surroundings of the unit.

SNCUs in the state were set up under the NRHM to provide better health care to the newborn babies and to reduce IMR in the state, said Chyaupatnaik.

The SNCU was set up at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in April last year.
