Undertrial stabbed by life convict

An undertrial prisoner (UTP) was allegedly stabbed by a life convict using a spoon at Cuttack Circle Jail, Choudwar, on Sunday. The injured, Sushil Mohanty, has been admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital.

The incident occurred in the afternoon when Sushil was sleeping in ward No. 47, which he shared with 16 others. Pramod Rout, a ward mate, allegedly stabbed him with a spoon causing injury to his stomach.

Jail officials said Rout, who belonged to Nuagarh village in Cuttack Sadar and was serving life sentence for murder, had psychiatric problems. He had been sent from the prison hospital to the ward recently after a period of observation.

The two did not have any previous rivalry. The incident could have taken place at the spur of the moment, jailor Subhakanta Mishra said.

A complaint has been lodged with Choudwar police in this connection.
