The farmers of Gondia block staged a demonstration here on Thursday demanding compensation for the crop loss incurred by them due to twin calamities of Phailin and subsequent rain.

Earlier, they took out a rally from Baji Chowk to Collectorate under the banner of Durniti Nibaran Samiti and Krushak Sangharsha Samiti.

According to official reports, crops in 21,956 hectares were damaged in eight blocks including Gondia. District administration has informed the State Government about the loss sustained by different departments.

During the demonstration, the farmers demanded that the Government should declare Dhenkanal a flood affected district. Their other demands included financial compensation of ` one lakh for each damaged house, repair of damaged roads, power supply to BPL farmers and compensation to farmers who sustained crop loss due to marauding elephants.

The Samiti secretary, Ranjan Kumar Lenka, said if the Government fails to meet their demands by December 4, they will move National Human Rights Commission and National Commission for ST and SC in this regard.
