Rahul to become PM one day: Tharoor

Talking to mediapersons at the venue of the second edition of the Odisha Literary Festival(OLF), Tharoor, however, said he is not the person to decide who will be the Prime Minister.

Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development (HRD) Shashi Tharoor on Thursday said he hopes Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will be the prime minister one day and he will be happy to work with him.

Talking to mediapersons at the venue of the second edition of the Odisha Literary Festival(OLF), Tharoor, however, said he is not the person to decide who will be the prime minister. “But he (Rahul) is an important leader of the party and number two,” he said and added, “I will be happy to work with him.”

To a question on the controversial ordinance, the  Minister said Rahul had expressed his view as the vice-president of the party which was widely supported by others.

Stating that he also did not support the ordinance from the beginning, Tharoor said many thought the government should not have proceeded with such an ordinance.

“Many felt that the government was going on a wrong path by trying to shield criminals,” he said and added that feeling of the public should also be respected.

Replying to a question, the Minister said though standard of education in the country was not bad, there is a need to spend more on research and development to reach international standard.

The Minister met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the Secretariat here and discussed development of education in the State.

The Chief Minister requested that the community college proposal should be approved by the Centre soon. Naveen also said funds should be allotted under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and Rashtriya Madhyamika Siksha Abhiyan soon.
