The Odisha chapter of Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI) has decided to set up a skill training centre in the city to address the shortage of the skilled manpower in building construction.
CREDAI-Odisha will approach the State Government with the proposal and ask for about one acre of land for setting up the institute and a ‘live site’. Lack of adequate skilled manpower for construction works necessitated the need for an institute which would impart proper skill development training as per the industry’s requirement.
Former president of CREDAI-Odisha DS Tripathy said the masons, carpenters, rod builders and the likes who are involved in construction of high rise buildings often lack the expertise required to construct structures of such a large magnitude. The institute will help them acquire necessary skills.
“We will assign the engineers working with us and bring in additional experts from outside to train the workers. The participants will be certified so that they can be recognised for their training elsewhere also,” said Tripathy. He added that the live construction site will enable the participants to get practical exposure.
The real estate developers will organise their annual real estate exhibition “Property Expo 13” at Janata Maidan from November 8 to 10. For the first time, they will conduct a skill training workshop in the exhibition which will also feature latest technology used in construction.
CREDAI-Odisha president Binay Krishna said recession had mandated the developers to shift towards construction of affordable houses in the range of Rs 15 to Rs 25 lakh.
The recent cases related to chit fund scam and builders being arrested in fraud cases have also reduced the flow of investment from Non-resident Indians (NRIs) in the real estate business.
With recession hitting the market, CREDAI-Odisha members are contemplating increasing construction of affordable houses like studio apartment or smaller housing unit, which will cater to the growing section of students and working professionals.
