Couple Beheaded over Land Dispute

BARIPADA: Three persons surrendered before police after killing their uncle and aunty over land dispute in Baisinga of Mayurbhanj district on Thursday.

The deceased are Kisan Marandi (65) and his wife Rukmani Marandi (56) of Kesra village. The accused are Kisan Marandi (50), his wife Dangi Marandi and their son-in-law.

Sources said the accused and the victim were at loggerheads over ownership of a plot of land since long.

IIC of Betnoti police station Alok Ranjan Ray, who visited the spot after the crime, said the victim had cut down branches of a tree on his land and the accused got irritated when he found that some of the branches had fallen on his crop land. Both of them had a scuffle over the matter a couple of days back and though the case was taken up in a village meeting, no decision was taken, added Ray.

They again quarrelled over the same issue on Thursday morning following which the accused hit the victim with bow and arrow leaving them seriously injured.

When the two were screaming for help, Kisan with the help of his wife and son-in-law beheaded them with an axe.

IIC Alok Ranjan Ray said all the three accused have been arrested and further investigation is on. Police have also seized murder weapons.
