Thousands of Anganwadi workers and helpers under the banner of Paschim Odisha Anganwadi 'O' Sahayak Sangha staged a road blockade in front of the office of Revenue Divisional Commissioner (North) over their long pending demands on Wednesday.
They submitted a memorandum addressed to the Governor with copies marked to the Chief Minister besides the Minister and Secretary of Women and Child Development Department to the RDC. The Anganwadi workers have decided to go on mass leave from Thursday over their demands including hike in salary and job regularisation.
After the RDC refused to give them a written assurance on their demands, they tried to break the police cordon in their bid to get inside the RDC office and were arrested.
Their other demands include recognition of Anganwadi workers as teachers, promotion policy for the workers and helpers, coverage under service condition and social security net, declaring Anganwadi centres as Pre-Primary Schools and special allowance for those working in the KBK districts. Central convener of the Sangha Prasanta Padhi said the Anganwadi workers will go on indefinite mass leave till the State Government fulfills their demands.
"Although the Constitution entitles equal pay for equal work, the Government is adopting discriminatory attitude towards Anganwadi workers," said Padhi.
