Uncertainty looms large over candidature of BJP leader Bhrugu Baxipatra for Jeypore Assembly seat despite his name being declared by the party for the upcoming election. Party functionaries are yet to give final nod to filing of nominations by Bhrugu amid strong protest by local BJP leaders.

Taking note of the widespread resentment, BJP functionaries held marathon meeting with Bhrugu at several places here on Wednesday to reach a consensus on his candidature.

Sources said senior BJP leaders and workers are opposing Bhrugu as he lacks support base in the segment. Notably, there were no strong ticket aspirants for the segment as the party lacked effective leadership in the area which is considered a stronghold of BJD.

Besides, the BJP had fared poorly in the recently concluded municipality elections under the leadership of Bhrugu. Senior leaders and workers are reportedly reluctant to fight the elections under the leadership of Bhrugu after the debacle in civic body polls.

When contacted, Bhrugu said he is in constant touch with party workers for last two days and the final date for filing his nomination would be decided only after the completion of grassroot level talks.

“The discussions on the issue are on the verge of completion and I would file nomination papers only after Friday,” he added.
