The accused, identified as Madhusudan Jena of Bamphakuda under Cuttack Sadar police limits, was extorting money from truck drivers on the NH passing through Cuttack.

Police nabbed him on the basis of information provided by a vigilant truck driver, who had noted down the appearence and motorcycle number of Jena during an extortion bid by him on April 10 night.

The gypsum loaded truck was on its way to Andhra Pradesh from Chandikhol when Jena allegedly stopped the driver on the OMP overbridge, about 100 metres from Chauliaganj police station.

Though in plain clothes, he identified himself as IIC Chauliaganj and sought to check the vehicle documents. Later, on the pretext of some shortcomings he demanded Rs 3,500 as fine.

When the driver said he just had Rs 400, he took the money and documents with him. In the process, the alert driver noted down the motorcycle number and informed the matter to the vehicle owner.

The owner filed a complaint with police. Verification of the bike number led police to Jena. He is said to have extorted money from several other truckers in the recent past.
