Chowk to Be Named After Abdul Kalam

SAMBALPUR: The busy CSB Zilla School Chowk in the City would be renamed after former President APJ Abdul Kalam. This was decided by the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC). Kalam had visited Sambalpur to attend the 150th foundation day of Chandra Sekhar Behera (CSB) Zilla School on November 29, 2014.

The SMC launched an eviction drive on Wednesday to pave the way for developing the Chowk. Apart from the school, the Chowk also houses the historic Paltan Kuan (well) that was dug up by the Britishers. Water of the well is believed to have medicinal properties.

Deputy Commissioner of SMC Sudhansu Kumar Bhoi said around 22 shops owned by the SMC which are located at the Chowk will be evicted. Paltan Kuan will be revived and a park would be developed at the place which will house the statue of the former President. The drain that passes along the road at the Chowk will also be widened.
