Cops Earn Odisha CM Pat for Crackdown on Crime

CUTTACK: Appreciating the drive launched by the police against anti-socials and tender mafia in the State, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday called upon the cops to intensify the campaign in the coming days.

“I appreciate the drive launched by the police against tender and transport mafia, organised crime and criminals. This should continue,” the Chief Minister said while addressing the 81st Foundation Day of the police here.

Stating that the Government is working to ensure a safe and fearless environment for people during the last 16 years, Naveen said police should discharge its duty in an impartial manner so that they are able to take on the high and mighty. “I call upon you to discharge your duty without fear and favour,” he said.

Praising the police efforts to counter Naxal activities in the State, Naveen said many Maoists and their supporters are returning to the mainstream because of the rehabilitation policy of the Government.

He called upon the police to ensure that common citizens always get justice. “Police should be more sensitive towards the needs of the poor, tribals, dalits, women, children and minorities,” he said.

Stating that community policing has gained the confidence of people, the Chief Minister asked officials to ensure that reception desks in all police stations worked efficiently. Steps are being taken for infrastructure development, establishment of new police stations and recruitment and training of more police personnel to make Odisha police number one in the country, he said.

The Chief Minister announced an increase in the annual grant of Odisha Police Welfare Fund from `10 lakh to `30 lakh per year.

Addressing the function, Director General of Police KB Singh advised police officials to prove their efficiency to take Odisha police to new heights. Additional Director General of Police Satyajit Mohanty read the Governor’s message for the occasion.

The Chief Minister awarded several police personnel for their outstanding performance. Several police officials including former DGP Manmohan Praharaj were also felicitated.

Naveen also released the ‘Odisha police newsletter’ and ‘Odisha police CUG telephone directory’ on the occasion.
