Engineer Held for Taking Rs 50 K Bribe

BHUBANESWAR: The Vigilance sleuths on Saturday arrested a State Government official while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a contractor.

The official, Dayanidhi Samal, is an Executive Engineer with the General Public Health department. He had demanded the bribe from contractor Alekh Chandra Majhi for clearing his bills amounting to Rs 1.84 lakh.

Samal had asked Majhi to pay him the money at a designated location between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Majhi approached the Vigilance officials who laid a trap and caught Samal red-handed.

Sources said during the raid, Samal had another Rs 50,000 cash in his possession which was also ill-gotten money. Samal is a resident of Cuttack and was on his way back home when the arrest took place.

Simultaneous raids were conducted at three places in Cuttack and Samal’s office in the Capital City.
