Supply Impure,Say Residents

JHARSUGUDA: Residents of areas under Belpahar Municipality have accused the civic body of supplying water that is high on iron content, through tankers. As per the 2011 Census, there are 38,993 residents under the municipality and 56,264 litres of water is required for them every day. The PHED, though, has been able to supply water to just 30 households under the municipal limits. Sources said as the groundwater level has gone down, water being sourced from deep tubewells contain excessive amount of iron, which is unfit for human consumption. Earlier, water was supplied after being treated in the  plant of Tata Refractory Limited. However, this arrangement was stopped owing to quality issues. Following this, the civic body has been drawing water from deep borewells.  When contacted, PHED Executive Engineer RN Naik said water samples will be collected from the affected areas and sent for test.
