BHUBANESWAR: Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday slammed the State Government for its move to hire retired teachers under the ‘Teacher on Call’ scheme to manage schools.
“Teachers are not taxi drivers and they are not expected to provide their service as and when required,” Pradhan said.
The Union Minister, who attended a party function here, said there is no dearth of qualified teachers in the State. When a large number of trained teachers is searching for jobs and several teachers are working on contractual basis, the State Government should take steps to fill up the vacant posts of teachers.
Disapproving the temporary measure like ‘Teacher on Call’ plan, Pradhan asked the State Government to refrain from playing with the future of students. Permanent arrangement must be made for the betterment of students who are the future of the nation, he said.
Expressing concern over the ‘crumbling’ education system in the State due to huge vacancies in teaching staff in Government schools, colleges and universities, the Union Minister said adhocism is not in the best interest of students.
The State Government, which has been contemplating for a long time to engage retired teachers in place of vacant teachers, recently decided to implement the ‘Teacher on Call’ scheme.
Taking exception to Pradhan’s criticism, School and Mass Education Minister Debi Prasad Mishra said the Union Minister should not compare teachers with taxi drivers.
The State Government wants to make the system smooth and ensure that studies in schools are not affected, he said.
In 2014, the School and Mass Education Department had decided to implement the scheme in High Schools. Dearth of qualified teachers in the State and lengthy process of recruitment of contractual teachers were cited as the reasons for such an arrangement.
Meanwhile, two years have passed but the State Government has not been able to recruit teachers to the vacant posts.
