Utkal varsity students stage protest

BHUBANESWAR: Students of Utkal University staged an agitation in front of the university main gate here on Monday night after two post-graduate students were allegedly heckled by a group of unidentified persons on the campus.

The two students who were manhandled are Santosh Das and Mukesh Sahoo, both first year students of Journalism. They were travelling on a motorcycle while the accused group accosted them near the RRL gate of the varsity. The duo was abused and assaulted by a group of drunkards, Students’ Union president Mahesh Prasad said.

Soon after the news spread, students congregated outside the main gate and demanded arrest of the miscreants. The miscreants reside in the quarters inside the university campus and such incidents have become a regular affair, Prasad alleged.
The agitation was called off after police assured the students of action. Saheed Nagar police has registered a case and is probing into the matter.
