SUNDARGARH:A 65-year-old woman, Sumati Tanti, was trampled to death by an elephant near her house at Lulkidihi village under Balishankara block of Sundargarh district on Saturday.
Sundargarh Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) AK Mishra said a herd of 15 elephants was driven away on Saturday evening. But, the herd came back to the village. At about 2 am, when the woman came out of her house, she was attacked by one of the elephants, he added.
However, villagers said her mud house was attacked several times by the elephants in the recent past. On the fateful night too the elephants attacked her house and when she tried to escape, she was killed.
An unnatural death case was registered and the body sent for autopsy on Sunday.
