BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) on Thursday cancelled its agitation programme for gherao of block offices across the State on December 30 demanding resignation of Bhubaneswar Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena in view of the model code of conduct imposed by the State Election Commission (SEC) for the ensuing panchayat polls.

According to Section five of Chapter-II of the model code of conduct issued by the SEC, burning of effigies of leaders of political parties is prohibited. Criticism of rival candidates on aspects of private life or of political parties on the basis of unverified allegations should be avoided, the model code says and adds,  no demonstration or picketing in any form before the residence of any individual or before Government offices will be allowed.

The OPCC, however, asked all the block Congress presidents to submit memorandum to block development officers demanding the resignation of the Mayor and CBI probe into the death of the engineering college student which is allegedly linked with the objectionable video.
