A software engineer from Karnataka drowned in the Bay of Bengal while on a swim at Chandrabhaga beach in Puri.

BHUBANESWAR: A software engineer from Karnataka drowned in the Bay of Bengal while on a swim at Chandrabhaga beach in Puri district on Sunday. Local fishermen have rescued one boy who tried to save her but failed and got swept away.

The deceased has been identified as Mansa N S, an IT professional from Bengaluru. She was a part of a nine-member group that had come here to visit the Sun Temple, a world heritage site at Konark.

Police sources said the incident took place when the group of six girls and three boys from a Bengaluru-based global information technology consulting firm were swimming in the waters. Mansa was swept away in the strong current of the sea.

“Listening to her screams, a boy from the group tried to save her from drowning, but he too got pulled in by the current. Later, local fishermen rescued him and fished out the body of the girl. The condition of the boy is stable and he is out of danger,” said a police official.

The  techies are under training at the firm’s Bhubaneswar centre. Their family members have been informed about the mishap, the officer added.
