ANGUL: In another bus mishap in the district in less than two months, five persons were killed and 50 injured on Tuesday. While three died on the spot, two others succumbed to injuries while being rushed to hospital.
The accident occurred when the bus had a head on collusion with a motorcycle coming from opposite direction and fell off a bridge at Tukuda village, about 2 kms from here, on NH-55. The ill fated bus was on its way from Angul to Athmallik when the mishap took place at about 3 pm. Eyewitnesses said the bus driver lost control and the vehicle fell from a bridge in a similar accident that had taken place near Athmallik in the district on September 9.

“The road condition on the particular patch is very bad and the bridge is narrow. The bus lost control while trying to save the biker. We rushed to spot after hearing the sound of the bus falling from the bridge and rescued the people,” said an eyewitness Ranjit Pradhan.
Angul SP Kabita Jalan, SDPO RN Deo, Additional District Magistrate Srinbash Behere and Sub-Collector Saroj Kumar Mahanty rushed to the spot and undertook rescue operations. Angul Collector Anil Kumar Samal, who was away at Bhubaneswar for office work, returned immediately and reached the hospital where the injured were undergoing treatment in the evening.

The Sub-Collector said three persons died on the spot and two others succumbed on the way to SCB Medical, Cuttack. The biker was among the dead. While 32 injured were shifted to SCB Medical, the rest were are being treated at Angul hospital, he added.
Meanwhile, the Collector gave an ex gratia of `10,000 to each family of the deceased persons from Red Cross fund and announced free medical treatment for the injured.
He also directed the local RTO to inquire into the accident. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has asked him to submit the inquiry report within a week.
