Student run over by truck

ANGUL: An 11-year-old student died when his bicycle was hit by a truck at Balhar Chowk in Talcher on Thursday. The student has been identified as Hitesh Behera of Santhapara village. Hitesh, a Class V student, was on his way to attend his tuition when the speeding truck from Banarpal hit his bicycle, killing him on the spot.

Irate locals staged a road blockade on the National Highway disrupting traffic from 7 am to 12 pm. The  villagers demanded `10 lakh compensation and a speed breaker in the area. The blockade was lifted after the truck owner gave `40,000 to the victim’s family.

An additional `10,000 was also provided to them from the Red Cross fund. IIC of Talcher police station Kailash Acharya said the driver has been arrested and the truck seized.
