BHUBANESWAR: Eminent poet and playwright in Maithili and Bengali Udaya Narayana Singh on Thursday said great authors like Rabindranath Tagore and Gopinath Mohanty are ardent believers in humanism and universalism.
"Humanism stressed on the earthly fulfillment of humans rather than only seeing earth as a preparation for paradise. I see a great humanism in the writings of Tagore and Mohanty," Singh said.
Former director of Central Institutes of Indian Languages, Mysore, Singh gave a talk on 'Treasure and Tranquility' here on the occasion of 103 birth anniversary of Gopinath Mohanty organised jointly by Gopinath Mohanty Foundation Trust and Odisha Sahitya Academy.
"Even after so many years after their death, many of us do not know how great thinkers and motivators they were," Singh added.
Recalling his association with Mohanty, the celebrated Odia writer and winner of the prestigious Jnanpith award, founder-director of Central Institute of Indian Languages and well know linguist Debi Prasanna Pattnayak said, ''Gopi babu had brilliantly depicted the grandeur of living and the intensity of suffering of tribal people.''
Omakar Nath Mohanty, son of Gopinath Mohanty, said many of the manuscripts of his father are still not published and the Trust is making endeavour for publication of these valuable treasures.
The meeting was presided by president of Odisha Sahitya Academy Harihar Mishra. Secretary of the Academy Aswini Kumar Mishra also spoke.
